ABFF to Take Place May 20–23, 2027 at Premier Venues Including the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, AMC The Grove

SUBMISSIONS NOW OPEN FOR ABFF 2027

LOS ANGELES, CA (August 18, 2026) – The American Black Film Festival (ABFF) announced today that its 31st edition will take place May 20–23, 2027 in Los Angeles, marking the beginning of the festival’s next chapter. Following its milestone 30th anniversary, ABFF enters its fourth decade as one of the industry’s most influential gatherings and a trusted platform for discovering talent, advancing careers, and building lasting relationships. The festival will convene its community at the center of the entertainment industry.

“For more than three decades, we’ve built ABFF with the belief that access can change the trajectory of a career and that creating space for new voices strengthens our entire industry,” said Jeff Friday, Founder of ABFF and CEO of NICE CROWD. “As we look to the future, our responsibility is to keep pushing forward, expanding what’s possible, and creating greater opportunities for the next generation of storytellers. That’s what this next chapter represents.”

ABFF 2027 will take place across several of the city’s leading cultural and entertainment venues, with additional locations to be announced. AMC The Grove will host screenings, while SLS Beverly Hills will serve as the hub for industry programming, including conversations, master classes, and professional-development sessions. The Original Farmers Market will feature activations and community experiences, with the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures serving as a venue for marquee events. Complimentary daytime shuttle service will connect the festival venues, providing attendees with convenient access to screenings, industry sessions, networking events, activations, and special presentations.

The festival will introduce new programming for its 31st edition, including ABFF First Look: The Studio Showcase, featuring previews of upcoming projects from studios, independent distributors and streaming platforms through exclusive footage, special announcements, and appearances by filmmakers and talent.

ABFF Sports, a festival within the festival, will explore the intersection of sports, storytelling, entertainment, media, business, and culture. The program will include screenings, conversations, and special presentations featuring athletes, filmmakers, entertainment and sports executives, journalists, and other influential voices.

Also new for 2027 is Crossroads, a noncompetitive film section welcoming filmmakers of all backgrounds whose narrative and documentary features explore the intersections of culture, identity, and community through distinctive perspectives and shared human experiences.

HBO^® returns as a Founding Sponsor, marking the 30th year of the HBO^® Short Film Award Showcase, one of ABFF’s longest running and a cornerstone of the festival’s commitment to discovering emerging talent.

Submissions are now open for the 31st annual ABFF, with competitive and noncompetitive sections spanning narrative features, documentaries, episodic content, and short-film storytelling. ABFF is an Academy Award^®-qualifying festival, with the winner of the HBO^® Short Film Award qualifying for the Academy Awards^® Live Action Short Film category. Submission categories include:

• U.S. Narrative Feature – A competitive section showcasing feature-length narrative films directed or written by filmmakers of African descent working within the United States. Representing the cornerstone of ABFF’s commitment to discovery, the section highlights distinctive voices, original storytelling, and compelling artistic vision. Selected films compete for the Grand Jury Prize, Directing Award, and Performance Award.
• International Narrative Feature – A competitive section dedicated to feature-length narrative films from across the global Black diaspora. The section celebrates distinctive storytelling voices and cinematic perspectives from outside the United States. Selected films compete for the Grand Jury Prize for International Narrative Feature.
• Documentary Feature – A competitive section presenting feature-length documentaries directed by filmmakers of African descent. The section showcases nonfiction storytelling distinguished by cinematic craft, insight, and cultural relevance. Selected films compete for the Grand Jury Prize for Documentary Feature.
• Crossroads – New Section for 2027 – A non-competitive showcase of narrative and documentary features that explore identity, culture, community, resilience, and belonging through distinctive American experiences. Open to filmmakers of all backgrounds, Crossroads highlights work that aligns with ABFF’s cultural spirit while offering fresh perspectives and meaningful opportunities for connection.
• HBO^® Short Film Award – Now in its 30th year, the HBO^® Short Film Award remains a cornerstone of ABFF’s commitment to discovering and elevating emerging filmmakers. Each year, five finalists are selected to screen at the festival before a distinguished jury. As an Academy Award-qualifying award, the recipient of the HBO^® Short Film Award becomes qualified for consideration in the Live Action Short Film category of the 100th Academy Awards^®, subject to all Academy rules and requirements. Submissions for the HBO^® Short Film Award will open at a later date, with additional details to be announced.
• Episodic Series – A competitive section showcasing episodic storytelling created by filmmakers of African descent. The section highlights compelling serialized narratives and innovative approaches to long-form storytelling. Selected works compete for the Grand Jury Prize for Episodic Series.
• Voices of Culture – Selection by invitation or internal curation only – A non-competitive showcase of short-form work by filmmakers of African descent whose films expand and enrich contemporary conversations around culture, identity, and community. Reflecting the breadth of the global Black experience, the section highlights distinctive voices across genres, forms, and storytelling traditions.
• The ABFF 9:16 Microdrama Project – A non-competitive showcase of original vertical microdrama series created by storytellers of African descent. Dedicated to celebrating emerging creators and new forms of mobile-first storytelling, the section highlights original serialized short-form content from creators working at the forefront of the medium. Selected projects demonstrate strong episodic momentum, emotional immediacy, and a clear command of serialized storytelling.

MIAMI BEACH, FL (May 31, 2026) – The American Black Film Festival (ABFF) today announced winners of the 2026 Best of the ABFF Awards, the premiere award ceremony honoring storytelling from the next generation of innovative filmmakers. Hosted by New York Times best-selling author and award–winning comedian, KevOnStage, the festival presented winners in the official film selection categories – narrative and documentary features, series, and the 29th HBO Short Film Award Showcase. The ceremony also honored acclaimed director Steven Caple Jr., who received the prestigious 2026 ABFF Alumni Award. The evening will also feature a special 30th anniversary musical performance by multi-platinum, Grammy^® Award-winning recording artist and actor Anthony Hamilton. The 30th annual ABFF took place in Miami Beach May 27-31.

ABFF Also Unveils Immersive Lifestyle Activations from Ally, Walmart, The Smithsonian, and Lexus

LOS ANGELES, CA (May 12, 2026) – The American Black Film Festival (ABFF) has unveiled a new slate of panels and conversation as part of its 2026 “Homecoming” celebration. The latest programming brings together influential voices across entertainment, sports, culture, and storytelling.

Joining the roster is a compelling look at historical preservation with The Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), commemorating 10 years of documenting Black history through moving images. Rounding out the announcement is GLAAD’s “From Story to Impact,” an important conversation exploring the power of queer storytelling to humanize the HIV experience and inspire meaningful dialogue and change.

The festival also welcomes Ben Watkins (Cross) to “Storyteller Unleashed: The Creative Powerhouse Behind Your Favorite Amazon MGM Originals.” The conversation will explore Watkins’ creative journey bringing acclaimed series including Cross and the upcoming The Greatest to the screen, offering audiences an inside look at the collaboration, creative instincts, and real-world challenges behind today’s most compelling television storytelling.

Newly confirmed for the CBS daytime series Beyond the Gates first-look session: legendary actor Clifton Davis, Daphnée Duplaix, and executive producer Sheila Ducksworth. They join a comprehensive look at the groundbreaking series from CBS Studios.

The television celebration continues with an exclusive preview of the final chapter of a fan-favorite saga. STARZ will host “Kanan’s Evolution: An Inside Look at Season Five of Power Book III: Raising Kanan,” featuring Mekai Curtis, London Brown, and additional panelists forthcoming. Ahead of the June 12 premiere, series stars will lead a moderated discussion offering the audience an inside look at the evolution of the Southside and the high-stakes family tensions that define the series’ climactic final season.

In a true “Homecoming” moment, the festival has unveiled the powerhouse lineup for the previously announced Netflix’s Celebration of Black Television panel, moderated by Nina Parker. Spanning generations of storytelling excellence, the star-studded conversation will feature icons like Debbie Allen and showrunner Felicia Pride discussing legacy and the highly anticipated sequel of A Different World alongside the series’ new lead, Maleah Joi Moon. The panel will also spotlight the creative forces behind Nemesis, including showrunner, creator and executive producer Courtney Kemp, co-creator and executive producer Tani Marole, and director Mario Van Peebles; alongside Michelle Buteau, creator, executive producer and lead star of Survival of the Thickest and the series showrunner and EP Amy Aniobi; as well as stars from Beauty in Black, Crystle Stewart and Taylor Polidore Williams.

Eight standout vertical microdrama series to premiere on CODEBLACK during the 2026 festival

LOS ANGELES, CA (May 4, 2026) – The American Black Film Festival (ABFF) today announced the first cohort of official selections for the ABFF 9:16 Microdrama Project Showcase, a new digital-first initiative designed to identify, showcase, and amplify outstanding vertical microdrama series. A second cohort of selections will be announced this fall.

The ABFF 9:16 Microdrama Project Showcase serves as the Festival’s official platform for discovering and elevating emerging voices in vertical storytelling. Through curated selection and digital-first exhibition, the initiative connects creators with global audiences and meaningful industry visibility, positioning them at the forefront of the rapidly expanding vertical content ecosystem.

This inaugural cohort, powered by Hartbeat, will premiere on the CODEBLACK app during the 2026 American Black Film Festival, offering the festival audience exclusive access to a dynamic slate of short-form, mobile-first series.

LOS ANGELES, CA (May 1, 2026) – The 2026 American Black Film Festival (ABFF) announced today the Non-Competitive Showcase Film Sections lineup including Voices Of Culture, African Stories, and AI x XR Storytelling Showcase. The 30th anniversary of ABFF will take place in Miami Beach May 27-31 under the theme “Homecoming.”

Voices Of Culture is a showcase of short films directed by persons of African descent. Curated by invitation only, this section highlights outstanding works that reflect the breadth of the global Black experience. The showcase features forty films from a variety of countries, including Rwanda, Belgium, Nevis, and Colombia, and features over fifteen World Premieres. Short films feature a variety of notable talent including Renée Elise Goldsberry, Tabitha Brown, Jabari Banks, and Russell Hornsby.

African Stories, a special non-competitive showcase spotlighting short films from Africa’s most dynamic emerging voices, celebrates the continent’s rich cultural perspectives and storytelling traditions, offering audiences a powerful window into the creativity shaping Africa’s diverse and rapidly evolving film communities. All five of the films included in the African Stories showcase are World or US premieres, with films represented across Nigeria, South Africa, and Kenya.

AI x XR Storytelling Showcase is a series of innovative works created through artificial intelligence and immersive technologies, curated in partnership with GRX Immersive Labs, which explore the future of storytelling by featuring bold new voices at the intersection of creativity and technology. The five films included in the AI x XR Storytelling Showcase are World or US Premieres and feature a variety of genres including Sci-Fi/Afrofuturism to Horror/Supernatural.

LOS ANGELES, CA (April 23, 2026) – The American Black Film Festival (ABFF) has officially unveiled the five finalists for the prestigious HBO Short Film Award Showcase, now in its 29th year, a cornerstone of the festival’s landmark 30th Anniversary “Homecoming” edition (May 27-31 in Miami Beach). This year’s lineup is led by the genre-bending Spilled Milk, produced by Oscar-winner Jordan Peele and starring J. Alphonse Nicholson (P-Valley) and Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi. Rounding out the high-wattage slate are world premieres featuring Arsema Thomas (Queen Charlotte), Amarah-Jae St. Aubyn (Small Axe), and Jeremy Villas, highlighting a compelling range of storytelling from psychological folklore to ballet- driven drama. Celebrating three decades of discovering cinematic talent, the HBO Short Film Award remains a vital pipeline for emerging filmmakers.

Winners will be announced during the “Best of ABFF Awards” on Saturday, May 30. The ceremony, hosted by author and three-time Emmy-nominated actor Dondré Whitfield, will culminate with the presentation of the HBO Short Film Award.
