American Black Film Festival Partners with The Art In Black Foundation to Introduce The South African Collective

L to R: Siyabonga Mlambi – ICEBO LIZAKUZAKHA, Steve Maphoso – MIGRATION, Thabiso Dakamela – RED BALLET DRESS ON, Naledi Modupi – SOFTLY STRONG

Exhibition to Debut June 12–14 During ABFF in Miami Beach

MIAMI BEACH, FL (June 10, 2025) – The American Black Film Festival (ABFF) is proud to announce a groundbreaking collaboration with the Art in Black Foundation to present The South African Collective—a debut curatorial art exhibition spotlighting five dynamic visual artists from South Africa. The exhibit, open exclusively to festival attendees, will be on view during ABFF, taking place June 12–14, 2025, at the New World Center in Miami Beach. The catalog of available artwork is HERE.

Curated by Allana Foster Finley of Cur8Africa, The South African Collective is the inaugural fine art initiative of the Art in Black Foundation—founded by Ellis Friday, a visionary young creative committed to cultural connection, with support from his parents, Nicole and Jeff Friday. This curated experience marks an evolution in ABFF’s programming, expanding the festival’s cultural offerings to include global visual art in dialogue with Black film, media, and storytelling.

The idea for this collaboration was born during an immersive art tour through South Africa led by curator Allana Foster Finley and attended by Jeff Friday. Inspired by the depth of artistic talent and cultural expression, the journey laid the foundation for what would become this inaugural showcase.

“This exhibition is an exciting step forward in ABFF’s mission to uplift global Black creatives,” said Jeff Friday, founder of ABFF. “We are proud to provide a platform where African art and cinematic storytelling can exist in conversation, inspiring deeper cultural connection.”

Featured Artists:

Steve Maphoso – A self-taught Angolan-born artist, Maphoso blends acrylic and charcoal to create emotionally resonant portraits. His current series centers on twin boys guided by ancestral intention, exploring themes of migration, ritual, and brotherhood through symbolic narrative and layered abstraction.

Thabiso Dakamela – With roots in Venda and Ndebele heritage, Dakamela’s Afrocentric work examines identity and emotion. His expressive style—often rendered in powerful blues—has earned national recognition, and his DKS Project House supports emerging artists in South Africa.

Assan Taylor – Known for textured portraits combining oil, charcoal, gold leaf, and found materials, Taylor’s work bridges tradition and innovation. His bold, multilayered pieces reflect the vibrancy of contemporary Southern African culture and human connection.

Siyabonga Mlambi – Originating from South Africa’s Eastern Cape, Mlambi’s art is deeply rooted in Nguni tradition and modern innovation. His unique style, Khanda-Art Superblur African Synthetic Cubism, employs fabric, stones, and mixed media to evoke unity, imagination, and spiritual energy.

Ayanda Moyo – A Zimbabwean artist whose work in charcoal and acrylic explores identity and culture, Moyo’s emotionally rich paintings invite deep reflection on the shared human experience through bold, expressive techniques.

Together, these artists bring their individual perspectives to a collective narrative that intersects visual art with the broader mission of ABFF—celebrating and amplifying Black stories worldwide.

The 2025 American Black Film Festival Announces “South African Stories” – A Short Film Showcase

LOS ANGELES, CA (April 22, 2025) – The 29th annual American Black Film Festival (ABFF) announced today a special presentation of short films titled “South African Stories” that highlights the artistry and perspectives of emerging South African filmmakers as part of its commitment to celebrating the richness and global influence of Black storytelling. This year’s festival will take place live in Miami Beach June 11-15, followed by an online segment June 16-24 on ABFF PLAY (https://abffplay.com/).

“South African Stories” will feature a curated selection of 5 independent short films that showcase the dynamic storytelling, cultural depth, and social themes shaping contemporary South African cinema. Each film offers a unique lens on life in South Africa, from personal narratives and historical reflections to explorations of identity, resilience, and artistic expression. Following the screenings, audiences will have the opportunity to engage in a Q&A session with the directors, gaining insight into their creative processes, inspirations, and the evolving landscape of independent filmmaking in South Africa. This conversation will foster cross-cultural dialogue, strengthening connections between African and African American storytelling communities.

“Through initiatives like ‘South African Stories,’ ABFF remains steadfast in its commitment to elevating underrepresented filmmakers and broadening our global impact,” said Jeff and Nicole Friday, Founders of NICE CROWD. “This program is more than just a showcase; it’s a vital bridge, amplifying the powerful narratives of South African filmmakers and connecting audiences across continents. We are celebrating the shared experiences and stories that bind the African diaspora, all through the transformative power of cinema.”

BTF, a comedy festival from NICE CROWD, the producers of the American Black Film Festival, is dedicated to amplifying BIPOC voices in comedy and providing a platform for the next generation of stand-up stars. Since its debut in 2023, the festival has drawn over 9,000 attendees and 1,000 comedian submissions for its “Breakout Comedian of the Year” competition–an award that has helped launch real careers. Previous winners, Flo Hernandez and Alfred Kainga, were signed by Innovative Arts talent agency and awarded $10,000, demonstrating the festival’s impact in propelling comedic talent to the next level.

Since winning, Kainga (2023) has been touring nationally, headlining in cities across the country for the first time. Meanwhile, Hernandez (2024) joined the “Guey Funny” comedy tour and will be sharing the stage with comedy greats Earthquake, Bruce Bruce, Tony Rock, and Dominique on April 5, 2025, at the Texas Trust Theatre in Dallas, TX. These milestones highlight the festival’s continued success in launching comedians into national recognition and career-defining opportunities.

“As we enter our third year, the momentum behind Because They’re Funny continues to grow,” said Jeff Friday, Founder of NICE CROWD. “The overwhelming response from the comedy world reaffirms our mission to amplify BIPOC voices on a national stage. We are proud to once again partner with Events DC to bring another unforgettable weekend of laughter, culture and community to the city.”

“The Because They’re Funny Comedy Festival has quickly become one of the most exciting and dynamic festivals in the world, and we are proud to welcome the Festival back home to Washington, DC for the third year in a row,” said Events DC President and CEO Angie M. Gates. “The city has long been a stage for cultural excellence, and this festival continues to elevate comedic talent, while bringing unforgettable experiences to residents and visitors alike.”

The three-day festival will feature headline performances, rising stand-up stars, industry panels, master classes, networking opportunities, and the highly anticipated flagship event, the Breakout Comedian of the Year competition. Drawing hundreds of entries nationwide, this competition culminates with the top six finalists competing for a $10,000 grand prize and the opportunity to secure representation by a top Hollywood talent agency, a career-defining moment for any up-and-coming comedian.

Now Accepting Submissions for the 2025 Breakout Comedian of the Year Competition Aspiring comedians from across the country are invited to submit their entries now for a chance to compete in this year’s festival. With past winners landing major talent representation and cash prizes, this is an unparalleled opportunity to be discovered.
